Carpet Steam Cleaning Is It Worthwhile | Infographic
Steam cleaning uses vaporised water and heat to lift soil out of the pile, which cleans the carpet thoroughly without the harsh scrubbing that damages fibre. Whether it is worth paying for comes down to what it removes, what it saves you, and what your carpet warranty asks for. Here is the honest answer.

What hot water extraction actually removes
Grit, sand, food residue, skin cells, dust mite waste and the greasy film that builds up from cooking and bare feet. A domestic vacuum handles the loose fraction at the surface; the rest is bound into the base of the pile and needs heat, moisture and suction to release. That is the gap the process fills, and it is why a carpet that looked merely tired often comes back two or three shades brighter. The method is explained step by step on our steam carpet cleaning page.
The cost compared with replacing the carpet
Recarpeting an average Sydney home runs into thousands once underlay, installation and moving furniture are counted. A professional clean is a small fraction of that and, done on a sensible cycle, keeps the existing carpet serviceable for years longer. Our rates start from $40 to $60 per hour, with a two-bedroom home from $120 and a three-bedroom from $150. Set against replacement, the arithmetic is not close.
Your warranty probably requires it
Most carpet manufacturers specify periodic hot water extraction by a qualified operator as a condition of their wear warranty, and some ask for receipts if a claim is ever made. Skipping it to save money can quietly cost you the warranty on a floor worth far more than the clean.
Drying time in Sydney conditions
Carpet cleaned with a properly balanced machine is damp, not soaked, and generally dries in four to six hours with airflow through the room. Humid summer days take longer, so we open the place up and set an air mover where needed. Anyone who leaves your carpet genuinely wet has over-applied solution and under-extracted it, and that is what causes wicking, shrinkage and a musty smell a week later.
When it is not the right call
Delicate wool, silk and antique floor rugs are safer off the floor and in our workshop — see rug cleaning. Carpet that is worn through to the backing or bleached by a spilt cleaning product cannot be recovered by any method, and we will tell you that before taking a booking rather than after. For the trade-offs against other methods, read our comparison of shampooing and steam cleaning.
