How a Dirty Carpet Affects Your Health | Infographic
Carpet is the largest filter in your house. It traps everything that comes through the door and holds it until something removes it. That is useful right up to the point where the filter is full, and then it starts working against you.
Dust mites and what they leave behind
Dust mites live on skin flakes and thrive in the warm, humid conditions Sydney gives them for most of the year. It is not the mite that triggers asthma and rhinitis, it is the protein in its droppings, and a full carpet can hold a great deal of it. Every footstep sends some of that back into the air you are breathing.
Mould in the underlay
Coastal suburbs and any home with poor airflow are prone to this. Carpet that has been wet, even from something as ordinary as a spilled bucket, can grow mould in the underlay while the surface feels dry within a day. The first sign is usually a musty smell in one room that will not lift.
Bacteria from shoes and pets
Anything on the footpath ends up on the floor. Add a dog that lies in the same spot each afternoon and you have a warm, fed environment for bacteria. Small children spend their day at that exact height, hands on the floor and then in their mouth.
Airborne particles you never see
Vacuuming with a machine that has no sealed filter picks dust up and blows the fine fraction straight back out the exhaust. The particles small enough to reach deep into the lungs are exactly the ones a cheap vacuum redistributes.
Signs your carpet has become the problem
A stale smell that returns a few hours after you air the room. Sneezing or itchy eyes that settle down when you leave the house. Visibly darker traffic lanes. A pet odour that gets stronger on a warm day. Any of those means the soil load has passed what vacuuming can manage. Our list of the signs your carpet needs professional cleaning goes into more detail.
What a proper clean removes
Hot water extraction at high temperature flushes the pile and pulls the water back out with the soil, allergens and bacteria suspended in it. That is different from a machine that wets the carpet and leaves it to dry. For households with asthma or eczema we also offer an allergen treatment, and since a mattress holds more skin flakes than any carpet in the house, mattress cleaning often does more for a hayfever sufferer than anything else. Fabric lounges are worth doing at the same time through our upholstery cleaning.
When it needs to happen today
Sewage backflow, a flooded laundry or a burst pipe is a health issue, not a cleaning issue, and it does not improve with waiting. We keep emergency and same-day capacity for exactly that, and our flood carpet restoration includes drying rather than just extraction. Call 1300 309 276 at any hour.
