Pet urine is the hardest common thing to get out of carpet, and the reason is simple: what you can see is only a fraction of what is there. A spot the size of a coaster on the surface can be four times that size in the underlay underneath.
Why the smell keeps coming back
Fresh urine is mildly acidic. As it dries it turns alkaline and leaves behind salt crystals bonded to the fibre and the backing. Those crystals are hygroscopic, meaning they draw moisture out of the air. That is why a room that seemed fine all winter suddenly smells on the first humid day in November, and why the smell returns after an ordinary carpet clean. You cleaned the pile. The crystals were in the underlay.
What to do in the first ten minutes
Blot with a thick white towel, standing on it to draw the liquid up. Do not rub, because rubbing spreads the contamination sideways and distorts the pile permanently. Rinse lightly with cool water and blot again. Skip the ammonia-based cleaners entirely, since ammonia smells like urine to a dog and will convince it that spot is the right place to go.
Finding the spots you cannot see
A UV torch in a dark room shows old urine as a dull yellow-green glow. Most people are surprised at how much shows up, particularly along skirting boards and in corners. It is worth doing before you decide how big the job is, and worth doing before an inspection if you are moving out of a pet-friendly rental.
How a professional treatment differs
Deodorisers only mask. The crystals have to be dissolved and physically flushed out, then the underlay treated, and in bad cases the carpet is lifted so the subfloor can be sealed. We use enzyme-based products that break down the organic compounds rather than covering them, followed by hot water extraction to remove what is left. That is the process behind our pet stain and odour removal, and it is a different job to a general steam carpet clean.
Sports and gym carpet
The same chemistry applies to sweat and spilled sports drink in gyms, clubrooms and change areas, where the odour builds gradually until the whole room carries it. That work goes through commercial carpet cleaning, usually outside opening hours.
