Carpet hides its condition well. It can look acceptable from the doorway and still be holding a couple of kilograms of soil, dust and skin cells per room. Rather than guessing, watch for these three signals — when any of them shows up, a professional clean is overdue.

1. The walkways have gone a different colour to the rest

Stand at one end of a hallway and look along the floor rather than down at it. If there is a darker or greyer ribbon tracing the path people take, that is compacted grit sitting in the base of the pile. Caught early it lifts out and the colour returns. Left for years, the grit cuts the fibre until the lane stays dull no matter what anyone does to it.

2. The smell returns a day after you vacuum

A vacuum takes the loose material off the top. It does nothing about what has soaked through to the backing or the underlay — spilt milk, a pet accident, a damp towel left on the floor. If a room smells fine on Saturday and stale again by Monday, the source is underneath, not on the surface. 3. Everyone is worse indoors than outdoors

Dust mites live in carpet, mattresses and lounges, and they feed on shed skin. When a household’s sneezing, itchy eyes or night-time coughing ease off outside the house and return indoors, the soft furnishings are worth investigating. Hot water extraction at temperature removes a large share of the allergen load, and an allergen treatment extends the effect. Bedrooms usually need the mattress cleaned at the same time, or the problem simply moves.

A truck-mounted machine heats water well beyond anything a hire unit reaches, injects it into the pile under pressure and vacuums it straight back out with the suspended soil. That combination of heat, agitation and strong extraction is why the carpet comes up damp instead of wet, and why it dries in hours. Carpet rarely wears out in the middle of a room. It wears out along the lines people walk, because grit rides in on shoes and gets ground into the base of the pile every time someone crosses it. Vacuum slowly, and more often than feels necessary

Speed is where most people go wrong. A quick pass lifts the surface fluff and leaves the sharp grit sitting down at the base of the fibre, where it slices the pile every time weight goes on it. Slow passes in two directions across the main walkways, once or twice a week, will do more for the life of a carpet than any product on a supermarket shelf. Bedrooms can comfortably wait a fortnight.

Stop the dirt at the door

A coarse mat outside and a softer one inside will catch a surprising share of what would otherwise end up in your hallway. Shake them out weekly, because a loaded mat simply hands the grit back. Households that take shoes off at the door notice the difference within a season, particularly in a home with pale carpet.

Handle spills in the first minute

Blot, never scrub. Scrubbing pushes the spill into the backing and frays the tips of the fibre, which leaves a dull patch that stays visible long after the mark itself has gone. Move the furniture occasionally

A lounge or bookshelf that never shifts crushes the pile flat and shades that patch from light, so it ages at a different rate to the rest of the room. Nudging heavy pieces a few centimetres twice a year is enough to stop a permanent dent forming. Castor cups help under the heaviest legs.

Book a professional clean before it looks dirty

Waiting until the carpet is visibly grey means the damage is already done.
