Pet urine is the hardest common thing to get out of carpet, and the reason is simple: what you can see is only a fraction of what is there. A spot the size of a coaster on the surface can be four times that size in the underlay underneath.
Fresh urine is mildly acidic. As it dries it turns alkaline and leaves behind salt crystals bonded to the fibre and the backing. Those crystals are hygroscopic, meaning they draw moisture out of the air. That is why a room that seemed fine all winter suddenly smells on the first humid day in November, and why the smell returns after an ordinary carpet clean. You cleaned the pile. The crystals were in the underlay.
Blot with a thick white towel, standing on it to draw the liquid up. Do not rub, because rubbing spreads the contamination sideways and distorts the pile permanently. Rinse lightly with cool water and blot again. Skip the ammonia-based cleaners entirely, since ammonia smells like urine to a dog and will convince it that spot is the right place to go.
A UV torch in a dark room shows old urine as a dull yellow-green glow. Most people are surprised at how much shows up, particularly along skirting boards and in corners. It is worth doing before you decide how big the job is, and worth doing before an inspection if you are moving out of a pet-friendly rental.
Deodorisers only mask. The crystals have to be dissolved and physically flushed out, then the underlay treated, and in bad cases the carpet is lifted so the subfloor can be sealed. We use enzyme-based products that break down the organic compounds rather than covering them, followed by hot water extraction to remove what is left. A good vacuum removes loose surface debris. That is genuinely useful and it should happen weekly. What it cannot do is remove the fine, oily soil that has bonded to the fibre, or the grit that has worked its way down to the backing. Those need heat, a pre-spray matched to the fibre, mechanical agitation and enough suction to pull the lot back out. None of that is visible until the carpet either smells or wears through.
Carpet works like a filter. It traps dust, pollen, skin cells and pet dander and holds them out of the air, which is a genuine benefit right up until the filter is full. Once it is saturated, ordinary foot traffic puts those particles back into the room. Abrasive grit is what actually kills carpet. Each particle acts like sandpaper against the fibre every time somebody walks on it, so the wear you see in a traffic lane is mechanical damage rather than staining. Removing that grit on a regular cycle is the cheapest thing you can do to extend the life of the floor. Supermarket spot removers work reasonably well on fresh, water-based spills. They struggle with anything that has soaked below the surface, and they can permanently set a stain if the chemistry is wrong for the fibre. Pet accidents are the clearest example. Urine passes through the carpet in seconds and sits in the underlay, so anything applied to the top is cosmetic and the smell returns within a fortnight. Every 12 to 18 months suits most households. Bring that forward to every six to nine months if you have pets, small children, or a light-coloured carpet in a busy hallway.
